The NFL has suspended Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones for the first two games of the 2018 season without pay for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Jones will miss the season opener against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 9 and the Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, with both games at Lambeau Field.
Mason Rudolph, James Washington and Marcell Ateman are gone, but attrition won’t stop Mike Gundy from expecting his Cowboys offense to score at will. After leading all freshmen with 1,142 rushing yards during the 2016 regular season and topping the Big 12 with 1,347 yards and 14 TDs on the ground during the ’17 regular season, Hill will be called upon to pop big plays with regularity even if J.D. King steps into a larger backfield role. Hill runs with a creativity and an anger that most defenses on Oklahoma State’s schedule won’t have an answer for, and with runs of more than 30 yards in seven of 13 games last year, he may be this year’s best proof that you don’t need to take to the air to pick up chunks of yards at a time.
Murray found his greatest success with the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the third round of the 2011 draft. A three-time Pro Bowler, Murray led the league with 1,845 yards with the Cowboys in 2014 and was named the Offensive Player of the Year. He set Cowboys record for most rushing yards in a game, most rushing yards in a season and most scrimmage yards in a season.
A lot has changed at The MMQB. Peter King has left for NBC to do a Monday column there. Gone too is Dom Bonvissuto, our former West Coast editor, who is now handling Peter’s column for NBC. A note about the two of them, for posterity, and for the purpose of gaining some sense of closure in my mind: Peter King gave me my dream job at 2He had my back when I made the sorts of mistakes that made some think I might have been too young and inexperienced to have that job.
I consider him one of my closest mentors for that, but he’s one of my best friends for another reason. In 2013 I told Peter about my grandmother’s disdain for the NFL’s new bag policy, requiring that fans use clear plastic bags to carry their belongings into games. She’s a lifelong Raiders fan, having attended games during the first season in 1960 and at least one game every year they’ve been in Oakland.
